How Scoring Works in THE VOID
The Formula
Every game in THE VOID uses a scoring system built from the same components:
Base Points -- awarded for correct actions. The base value reflects the difficulty of the specific challenge.
Accuracy Multiplier -- precision matters. Partial credit exists in some games (Sarcasm Detector's scale rounds, Memory Leak's partial recall), but full marks always beat partial marks.
Speed Bonus -- faster correct responses earn more. This is a bonus, not a penalty — there is no timer death in most games. Take your time, but know that speed is rewarded.
Streak Multiplier -- consecutive correct answers build a streak that multiplies your score. Break the streak and the multiplier resets. This is where scoring becomes exponential.
Act Multiplier -- later acts in a 100-level run carry higher base multipliers. Reaching Act 10 means your correct answers are worth significantly more than in Act 1.
Why Streaks Matter Most
The streak multiplier is the single most important scoring component. A player who answers 10 questions correctly in a row scores dramatically more than a player who answers 10 correctly with 2 wrong in between.
This is intentional. THE VOID rewards consistency over lucky bursts. A long streak demonstrates sustained cognitive performance — the kind of performance that differentiates human attention from machine attention.
A 10-streak is worth more than the sum of 10 individual correct answers. Protect your streak.
Cognitive Ratings
Your scores translate into cognitive ratings that describe your current level in each ability:
| Rating | What It Means | |--------|--------------| | DEVELOPING | Building fundamentals. Still learning the mechanics. | | COMPETENT | Solid performance. Consistent on early acts. | | ADVANCED | Strong across most acts. Handles complexity well. | | ELITE | Top-tier performance. Pushes into late acts reliably. | | TRANSCENDENT | Exceptional. Deep acts, long streaks, minimal errors. |
Ratings are per-ability, not per-game. Your Visuospatial Memory rating reflects your performance across all games that test visuospatial memory.
What the Leaderboard Ranks
Deep-dive game leaderboards rank by level reached in a run. Score is the tiebreaker when 2 players reach the same level.
This means the leaderboard rewards depth of play, not just per-level efficiency. Reaching level 87 with a lower score ranks higher than reaching level 60 with a higher score. Getting further is what counts.
Deterministic, Not Lucky
All scoring is deterministic. Given the same inputs — same accuracy, same speed, same streak — the score is always the same. There is no random bonus, no luck component, no variance from external factors.
This is a design principle. Scores in THE VOID measure your performance, not your fortune. Every point was earned.
